The ESC Congress 2022

Just in time for its 70th anniversary, the ESC Congress 2022 took place once again as a face-to-face event. Cardiologists had the opportunity for direct exchange with colleagues from their field. In addition, they learned about results from clinical studies even before they are published in the European Heart Journal and other media.

The date was during 26-29 August 2022, when the European Society of Cardiology held the event in Barcelona. The venue was the Congress Centre. The ESC also planned to continue with the digital format of the event, which was very successful at the ESC Congress 2021. In this way, it also offered medical professionals the opportunity to participate for those who could not be present on site.

What is the ESC about?

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has set itself the goal of reducing cardiovascular disease, which is the most common cause of death in Europe with 4 million deaths (47 per cent).

Important for clinics, practice and research

At the annual ESC congress in Barcelona, experts came together to present the latest developments in cardiovascular medicine and patient care. They discussed research results from cardiac surgery and clinical practice, news for prevention, diagnostics and therapy of heart and blood vessel diseases such as valvular heart disease and heart failure, and which therapy options are included in the current guidelines.

What were the highlights?

The ESC has opted for a hybrid format for the first time at the 2022 Congress. The entire programme was also made available online and many sessions were livestreamed. In addition, the ESC premiered new session formats and live on-site activities.

Highlights of this year's European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress included new insights into cardiac imaging, with its profound impact on prevention, diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and the management of interventions and follow-up of therapeutic procedures.

More content options

Right at the start of the event, participants received an overview of the ESC Guidelines 2022 in the session of the same name.

In the hot-line sessions, many interesting recently completed and unpublished studies were presented for the first time. These included the ADVOR study and the DELIVER study on heart failure therapy, the eBRAVE-AF study that investigated the extent to which the smartphone can be used for atrial fibrillation screening, and the COVID-PACT study investigating antithrombotic therapy in critically ill patients with COVID-19.
